on coping skills…

Let’s talk coping skillz! 🥋

I look at having positive coping skills as being able to stay calm in chaos (regulate our emotions). It’s like putting on our karate uniforms, and feeling truly ready to fight off negative things life throws at us.

Not today, negative emotions and unhealthy thinking styles, not today! 👋🏼 🧠 Recently I learned that we need more than a good sunset in our routines.

A study in 2017 found that the more variety we have in positive coping skills precedes positive adjustment to our surroundings and less suicidal ideation/depressive thinking over time than using a smaller number of coping skills.

Consequently, they also found on the opposite end - the more negative or unhealthy coping skills we engage in predicted an increase in depressive symptoms and poor regulation of emotions. 🧠
